This class is 40 hours:

5 hours in class

5 hours of training practicing pre-trip inspections and the practical air test

15 hours of practical training behind the steering wheel
-
15 hours observation time

Graduated class 5 driver’s license (No Novice restrictions)

Current drivers medical

SGI written 3A learners’ exam

At least 18 years of age

The written air test must be completed before the practical air test exam

This course meets the SGI MELT requirements of:
-47 hours of in class time
-39 Hours of driving time
-35.5 hours of yard time
(includes pre-trip inspection, coupling/uncoupling, backing maneuvers and air brakes)

Air Brakes
This MELT Air Brakes course covers the fundamentals of air brakes, including the operation and maintenance of air-braked vehicles. This course is taught in two parts, a 7 hour classroom session and a practical in-yard session. We cover topics such as the basic components of an air system, how to identify the function of each component, how to check for proper brake adjustment, how to set up the brakes, and how to maintain and troubleshoot the air brake system. In order to participate in this course, you must be at least 18 years of age and have successfully passed the written air test.
